Participants impress at CEOI’s Collaboration and Creative Ideas Lab

The latest cohort to take part in CEOI’s Collaboration and Creative Ideas Lab have been commended for being ‘passionate’, ‘engaged’ and ‘willing to learn and develop’.

Several innovative and novel concepts emerged from this year’s Lab, which gives early career researchers and professionals working in Earth observation (EO) the chance to explore new ideas, collaborate and develop proposals for EO instrument concepts that address pressing scientific, societal, and commercial challenges.

The hands-on programme, which was led by expert facilitators and supported by mentors with decades of experience in EO innovation, culminated in final concept pitches from participants on October 31.

CEOI Co-Director of Science Josh Vande Hey said: “We have been so impressed by this year’s cohort. They have demonstrated a passion for Earth observation that has been encouraging to see, along with new ways of thinking and novel approaches to the challenges facing this sector.

“They should also be commended for their willingness to listen to, and learn from, the team of mentors who nurtured their ideas, while supporting one another to further initial concepts. This type of collaborative working, in an environment that encourages creativity and free thinking, will help to secure the future of EO in the UK.”

Participants, who had to submit a comprehensive application to secure a highly sought-after place on the prestigious programme, gave positive feedback throughout the duration of the workshop.

They had this to say about the experience:

  • The sessions provided great freedom and promoted the right workspace to allow initial ideas to flourish. As someone who is new to EO concept design, I felt my thoughts were heard and responded to – 5 stars!
  • Great engagement and interesting
  • A positive atmosphere
  • It was interesting to talk to people from a range of backgrounds
  • An excellent opportunity to meet new, likeminded people and generate ideas
  • Great fun
  • I really enjoyed the relaxed, collaborative style and felt it supported connection and creativity

Christine Bell, Director of Centre for Facilitation which ran the Lab, said: “We’ve seena month of creative collaboration, with some brilliant early ideas from unique early career researchers-led collaborations starting to gather momentum.

“Thanks to all our participants for truly engaging in the virtual and in person process – your willingness to try different approaches and to be creatively curious was a real joy.”

The team also thanked mentors Kim Lake, Amanda Regan, Christopher Brownsworth and Rob Scott for sharing their expertise and helping shape the ideas that were brought to the table.
